WATCH: Right-Wing Activist Chaitra Kundapura Among 7 Held For Conning Bengaluru Businessman Of Rs 5 Crore On Pretext Of Providing BJP Ticket

New Delhi: Chaitra Kundapura, a prominent Hindutva activist, and six others have been arrested by the Bengaluru police for allegedly defrauding a businessman of Rs 5 crore on the pretext of providing him a BJP ticket from the Byndoor assembly constituency in Udupi district of Karnataka.

An official said that a team of central crime branch (CCB) of the Bengaluru police took Chaitra Kundapura and six other suspects into custody from near the Sri Krishna Mutt in Udupi on Tuesday night.

As per a complaint filed against Kundapura and others by Govinda Babu Poojary, a Byndoor native who owns hospitality and catering businesses in Bengaluru, the accused Hindutva activist had duped the businessman of around Rs 5 crore after promising him a BJP ticket from his native constituency.

Poojary, who filed a complaint at the Bandepalya police station in Bengaluru on September 8, stated that he was introduced to the prime accused, Chaitra Kundapura, by a Sangh volunteer Prasad of Byndoor.

In his complaint, Poojary stated that Chaitra Kundapura claimed to have close ties with RSS and BJP leadership and promised to get a ticket for him to contest from Byndoor in the 2023 assembly elections.

He claimed that Chaitra took him to meet different persons and the huge sum was paid in three stages.

The complainant also alleged that Chaitra Kundapura and other accused had threatened to eliminate him and demanded that the police take strict action against the accused.

The businessman claimed that Chaitra had demanded Rs 3.5 crore from him in the name of a non-existent RSS leader named “Surendra ji”, however, after the aspiring politician paid the sum in three installments, he was told that Surendra ji had passed away during a visit to the Himalayas, India Today reported.

Later, Chaitra told Poojary that a ‘Swamiji’ called Abhinav Halsree had connections within the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and would help procure a BJP ticket for him but the businessman had to pay a sum of Rs 1.5 crore for that to happen.

While Chaitra has been named as the prime accused, youth BJP leader Gagan Kadur, Srikant Naik, and Prasad have also been named in the FIR as co-accused.

Chaitra Kundapura is a popular face among Hindutva activists and several FIRs have been registered against her at different places for inflammatory speeches.

Citing police sources, news agency PTI reported that the accused will be taken to Bengaluru and produced before the court. They have been charged with criminal breach of trust, intimidation, cheating and impersonation. Further investigations are on, they said.
