Lucknow: Despite his notorious reputation as a criminal, Mukhtar Ansari had carved a noteworthy name for himself in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh.Winning from the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh, Ansari had achieved victory in five separate elections to the Legislative Assembly. Interestingly, the Bahujan Samaj Party bolstered two of these wins. Moreover, Mukhtar Ansari is also kin to Mohammad Hamid Ansari, a distinguished personality who has served as the former Vice President of India.
Earlier today, the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari passed away at Banda Medical College Hospital in Banda after he suffered a cardiac arrest.
Gangster Mukhtar Ansari suffered an unfortunate accident in the prison toilet, which was promptly treated by the jail’s medical staff, according to a report shared by the UP prison department. Ansari, once involved in underworld criminal activities, was a seasoned politician who had been shifting between Punjab and Uttar Pradesh prisons since 2005. Notably, he had more than 60 cases pending against him. However, since September 2022, Uttar Pradesh courts have ruled on eight of these cases, which led to his imprisonment in Banda prison.
‘Infamous’ Career Of Mukhtar Ansari
Mukhtar Ansari, the ‘Bahubali’ of Poorvanchal, was infamous in the 1990s due to his engagement in criminal activities in the cities of Mau, Ghazipur, Varanasi, and Jaunpur districts. He started his political career in the mid-90s after he became a part of the student union at Banaras Hindu University. Later, due to his popularity, he was given a seat in the flight assembly elections and was elected as an MLA in 1996.
Mukhtar Ansari, who once served on the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, had been served a life sentence for procuring a firearm license in 1990 using counterfeit papers. The life sentence marked his eighth guilty verdict, which was within a short two-year frame, implying an extensive history of criminal activities. Apart from that, he was also sentenced to an additional half-year of imprisonment based on the Arms Act’s Section 30.
In 2007, Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Portraying herself as a supporter, BSP supremo Mayawati portrayed Mukhtar Ansari as a modern-day hero for the less privileged, despite his continuous involvement in criminal cases. Despite his confinement, Ansari fought the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, representing Varanasi under the BSP banner but was defeated by BJP candidate Murali Manohar Joshi.
