Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Tuesday gave a scathing rebuttal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘mangalsutra’ attack, asserting her mother sacrificed hers for the nation and claimed that the PM “does not understand the importance” of the ‘mangalsutra’.
Addressing an election rally in Karnataka’s Bengaluru, Priyanka lashed out at PM Modi over his allegations that the Congress will “snatch” the ‘gold and mangalsutras’ of women and distribute these among those with “more children”, apparently a reference to Muslims.
“What talks are happening in this country? Two days back there were speeches that Congress wants to snatch your ‘mangalsutra’. This country has been free for the past 75 years, and 55 years Congress was in power. Did Congress ever snatch your gold or ‘mangalsutra’?,”Priyanka asked.
She was referring to Modi’s allegations that the Congress will give away people’s hard-earned money and valuables to “infiltrators” and “those who have more children” — alluding to Muslims in his campaign speech in Rajasthan yesterday — and would steal the “gold and mangalsutra of mothers and sisters” if voted to power.
“When there was war, Indira Gandhi (her grandmother and former prime minister) donated her gold,” Priyanka said in a blistering attack on the Prime Minister.
“My mother’s ‘mangalsutra’ was sacrificed for this country,” the Congress leader said, while referring to the assassination of her father and former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by terrorists.
“Had Narendra Modi understood the importance of ‘mangalsutra’, he would not have spoken such unethical things,” she asserted.
