Team India will set their sights on the ODI format after successfully whitewashing Sri Lanka in the T20I series as the three-match ODI series gets underway with the first ODI between the two sides at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday (August 2). This will be India’s first ODI match since the 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia in Ahmedabad.
Captain Rohit Sharma is back in charge of the side after stepping down from the T20I side by announcing his retirement after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in June this year. Apart from Rohit Sharma, the likes of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are also back in the side.
The return of these players will create a selection dilemma as India will have to pick between Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the wicketkeeper’s position. It will also be a toss-up between Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag for the all-rounder’s slot with Hardik Pandya being left out.
“It’s a tough call (wicketkeeper-batter between Rahul and Pant) to make. Both are quality players, and you know the abilities of both the players. They are match-winners in their own way. They have won a lot of games for us in the past,” Rohit Sharma said during the pre-match press conference on Thursday.
“It is not easy to pick a team or a player when you have quality like that. It is always nice to have problems like that while picking up the teams, so you know that there is quality in the squad. I look forward to these kind of problems till I am the captain,” he added.
Hosts Sri Lanka have their own injury concerns with pacer Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka missing out due to injuries.
