In Hindi cinema, four actors made their mark in the 1960s, and their unparalleled contributions to the industry are unforgettable. One of them is Dharmendra. Although he debuted in 1960, it took him four years of struggle before he gained recognition in 1964. However, after this film, he never played a villainous role again.
Meet actor who got only Rs 51 for his debut film
Dharmendra starred in many iconic films during his career, including Aayi Milan Ki Bela and Sholay, which elevated his stardom and won him countless fans. In 1975, Sholay became a historic film that still stands as one of his greatest achievements. Even today, Dharmendra continues to deliver hit films, and he has appeared in around 33 films with his wife, Hema Malini.
His pairing with actresses like Moushumi Chatterjee and Zeenat Aman was a huge success, and he also worked in 10 films alongside Amitabh Bachchan.
Dharmendra’s career began with his debut film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere in 1960, for which he was paid a modest fee of Rs 51. While the film didn’t bring him the success he deserved, Dharmendra continued to appear in several films. It wasn’t until 1994’s Aayi Milan Ki Bela that his career truly took off, especially after he played his first and only villain role in that film.
Bobby Deol’s villain roles became superhit
Like his father, Dharmendra’s son Bobby Deol also pursued acting. He began his career in romantic roles, most notably opposite Twinkle Khanna, but after his career faced a slump, he found a new direction by taking on villainous roles. Films like Aashram and Villain helped revive his career. Currently, he is playing a negative role in the South Indian film Kanguva, marking a successful return to villainous roles that have reignited his career.
Dharmendra’s blockbuster legacy
Throughout his career, Dharmendra has delivered several blockbuster films with legendary actresses like Hema Malini, Waheeda Rehman, and Sharmila Tagore. Aayi Milan Ki Bela remains one of the most important films in his career, where he overshadowed the lead actor Rajendra Kumar and showcased his exceptional acting prowess.
