Born in Madras, Tamil Nadu, AR Rahman was always keen towards music since childhood. His father RK Shekhar was a film score composer for Tamil and Malayalam films. At the age of four, he started learning piano and began helping his father in the studio.
Studying in Madras, Rahman graduated with a diploma in Western classical music from the school. The veteran music composer was just 9 when he lost his father due to unknown illness. He took responsibility of his family to save them from the financial crisis. At a very young age, he left studies and became a sole earner of his family.
In 1984, when his younger sister fell severely ill, he was introduced to the Qadiri Sufi order. At 23, in 1989, Rahman along with his family members converted to Islam, adopting the name Allah Rakha Rahman

He used to support the household expenses by playing piano professionally. After few years, he took admission in college, but later dropped out to form a music career for himself. Rahman formed his own brand and started writing jingles for advertisement. Reportedly, he wrote jingles for about 300 advertisements.
Gradually his work start gaining recognition and he got his first ever break in Tamil film Roja. Once he started composing songs for films, there was no going back. His music was loved by many people and his career started gaining momentum. Over the years, AR Rahman has created several hit songs and albums including Bombay, Dil Se, Roja, Rang De Basanti and Rockstar among others.

He has won many awards for his outstanding music composition and songs. He has won Guinness World record twice. Moreover, he is a recipient of Oscar award for his songs in the 2008 film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
AR Rahman is currently the highest-paid singer in India. As per multiple reports, Rahman charges Rs 3 crore for each song, charging 12-15 times higher than other renowned singers like Shreya Ghoshal, Arijit Sing, Sonu Nigam and more.
