This blockbuster featured 3 superstars, yet director, distributors doubted its success, was released in only 9 theatres, budget of the film was Rs…

When massive stars and a renowned director come together for a movie, it is usually considered a guaranteed hit even before its release. However, there was a time when superhit actors came together for a film, but the director wasn’t very confident about it. In fact, the movie barely earned anything in its first week and was almost written off as a disaster. But, surprisingly, things took a sudden turn and the fate of the movie, the director, and the actors changed completely. The movie was Yash Chopra’s Daag.

The film began to attract audiences

It’s said that despite the star power of Rajesh Khanna, Rakhee and Sharmila Tagore, Yash Chopra was not very sure about the film. Therefore, he decided to release it in just 9 theatres across the nation. The movie struggled at the box office at the start and earned very little in its first week. In fact, the movie seemed as though it might be a flop. It is also said that Rakhee gave Rs 3 lakh from her own pocket to make the film.

However, within a short time, it began to create a buzz, thanks to word-of-mouth publicity. The film began to attract audiences. Within six days of the film’s release, the number of prints had to be tripled. Despite a modest budget of 60 lakh rupees, Daag went on to earn about Rs 3 crores, making it the third highest-grossing film of the year.

About Daag

The adaptation of the 1886 Thomas Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge, Daag featured a stellar cast, including Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Rakhee in lead roles, along with Madan Puri, Kader Khan, Prem Chopra and A. K. Hangal in pivotal roles. At the 21st Filmfare Awards, Daag received 7 nominations, including Best Film, Best Actor and Best Actress, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress. Interestingly, Yash Chopra used Raakhee’s character name, Chandni, in his later films, Silsila and Chandni.
