Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin had long hair, a thick beard, and a body that stank. He was often drunk and never bathed. He had relationships with prostitutes, yet he was believed to be a skilled occultist and priest. His ability to heal people and maintain their health was considered his greatest strength.
Rasputin referred to himself as a sage and also claimed to be a mystic healer. He gradually gained fame and established connections with the Russian royal family and orthodox priests. Later, he was introduced to Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna. The couple had a son, Alexei.
Alexei was suffering from hemophilia, a rare disorder that impairs blood clotting. Rasputin claimed he could heal the disease and provided treatment to the young Alexi, who showed signs of recovery. As a result, Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra, placed their trust in him.
The Tsar’s sister, Grand Duchess Anastasia, claimed that Rasputin knelt beside Alexei’s bed and prayed while he was being treated. He insisted on keeping the palace quiet during the treatment. Some people believed that Rasputin used a treatment, commonly applied to horses to stop bleeding, on Alexei.
Tsar Nicholas left the capital with his soldiers, and Alexandra assumed control. However, it was Rasputin who, in effect, held the power and made all the decisions.
Rasputin also faced allegations of having an intimate relationship with Alexandra. Additionally, he was accused of colluding with Germany and being a traitor. Prince Felix Yusupov killed Rasputin on December 30, 1916. Yusupov hatched a conspiracy to assassinate Rasputin after witnessing his growing influence over the royal family.
Yusupov had offered him a cake with potassium cyanide but Rasputin appeared unaffected by the poison. .Then he shot him multiple times but Rasputin did not die. Later, he was thrown into a river, where he eventually died from drowning.
In 1916, Rasputin had already predicted his death in a letter he left behind before January 1. He also foretold that if the people killed him, there would be no issue, but if he were killed by the elite, it would lead to a conflict between brothers.
Rasputin’s prediction came true when Tsar Nicholas II abdicated in 1917, and his family was executed in July 1918.
