As Russia hammers Ukraine with Iran made Shahed drones, Kyiv tests ‘killer drone’ to counterattack, the drone is…, made by…

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing Russia Ukraine war, many reports have emerged suggesting that Iran is supplying its homemade drones and missiles to Russia and that have been used to a great effect by the Russian military. The most prominent name is Shahed drones.

Shahed drones are Iranian-designed loitering munition, also referred to as a kamikaze drone or suicide drone.

To counter these drones, it is reported that Ukraine has successfully conducted test flights of a German-built interceptor drone which is said to have been designed to neutralise reconnaissance UAVs and Shahed drones.

This was announced by Brave1, a Government of Ukraine platform to bring together innovative companies with ideas and developments that can be used in the defense of Ukraine. Brave1 was launched on 26 April 2023.

Brave1, in a statement on its official Facebook page, revealed that Ukrainian operators tested the drone and confirmed its effectiveness in addressing the modern challenges of war.

The Facebook post reads: “Conducted testing of the interceptor drone from a German manufacturer. Ukrainian operators operated the drone and were able to personally confirm its technological relevance to modern war challenges. 📌 What kind of drone is this? Bpla is designed to intercept “Shahedív”, enemy intelligence bpla. In particular, it is capable of reaching speeds of 300 km / h and covering distances of 20 kilometers. In the manufacturer’s plans – to equip the drone with a system of automatic guidance based on machine vision. Representatives of the Security and Defense Forces were present at the interceptor tests, who highly assessed the drone’s capabilities. We also work on metčíngom manufacturer with Ukrainian developers of related solutions. Confident that this partnership will be beneficial for both the German side and domestic innovators. We continue to work towards building partnerships with international developers whose solutions and technologies can help Ukraine win this war.”

The interceptor drone is said to achieve a speed of up to 300 km per hour and operate within a range of 20 km.

The representatives from the Ukrainian Defense Forces the testing of the drone and praised its performance. Now it is being contemplated to arm the drone with an automatic targeting system based on machine vision.

Brave1 has not revealed any identity of the developer and manufacturer of the drone. However, open-source intelligence suggests that German defense firm TYTAN Technologies has developed the drone.

The Iranian Shahed one-way attack drone has become a central element of Moscow’s offensive strategy as it is low-cost yet highly effective unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which has caused substantial damage to Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, particularly its power grid.

Shahed 136 has a seven-foot wingspan and can travel up to 600 miles (965.6 km) with a warhead weighing up to 100 pounds (45.3 kg).
