Beijing: During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, President Donald Trump offered India F-35 fighter jets. In response, China has reacted sharply. The Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized this proposal from the U.S., stating that the Indo-Pacific is a great example of “peace and development,” not a battleground for geopolitical games. China also stated that forming “special groups” and engaging in geopolitical games will not bring security.
Indo-Pacific example of development and peace
Addressing a regular press briefing on Friday, February 14, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, “No one should make China an issue in the relations and cooperation between countries, nor should they try to incite factionalism and confrontation.” He added, “The Asia-Pacific is a great example of peace and development, not a battleground for geopolitical games. Forming special groups and engaging in factionalism and confrontation will not bring security, and in no way will the Asia-Pacific and the entire world remain peaceful and stable.”
India-US relations
When asked about the agreement to launch the US-India Compact initiative aimed at strengthening defense ties and advancing military partnership between the USA and India, Guo stated that cooperation between countries should not target any third party or harm the interests of others.
He said, “I want to reiterate that China believes that relations and cooperation between countries should not target any third party or harm the interests of others, and should be conducive to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.” Pakistan also expressed concern.
Pakistan expressed concern on Friday, stating that this move would disrupt the regional military balance, undermine strategic stability, and hinder efforts to achieve lasting peace in South Asia. An irate Pakistan urged its international partners not to adopt a “unilateral approach that is divorced from ground realities.” During a weekly press briefing on Friday, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said, “Pakistan is very concerned about India’s planned transfer of advanced military technologies. Such moves exacerbate military imbalances in the region and undermine strategic stability.”
Urging to avoid a unilateral stance from America
He said, “They are not helpful in achieving the goal of lasting peace in South Asia. We urge our international partners to adopt a comprehensive and objective approach to issues of peace and security in South Asia and to avoid a unilateral stance that is disconnected from ground realities.” On Thursday, Trump addressed a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after bilateral talks, stating, “Starting this year, we will increase military sales to India by several billion dollars. We are also paving the way to eventually provide India with F35 stealth fighter jets.”
