Along with this honour received from the hands of the President of the country, the honoured individual is also provided with several facilities by the government. They are given priority in order and are also invited to special government events.
Do you know what is given during the Bharat Ratna ceremony and what metal the medal is made of, and from whom does the Government of India get this special award made? Let’s find out…
No gold or silver in Bharat Ratna
If you think that gold or silver is used in making the prestigious award Bharat Ratna, you are mistaken. According to information provided on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s website, a person awarded the Bharat Ratna is given a certificate signed by the President and a medal.
This medal resembles a peepal leaf and is made of pure copper. Its length is 5.8 cm, width is 4.7 cm, and thickness is 3.1 cm. A shining sun made of platinum is depicted on this leaf. The edge of the peepal leaf is also made of platinum. The second part of the Bharat Ratna has ‘Bharat Ratna’ written in Hindi at the bottom. On the back, ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is inscribed below the Ashoka pillar.
This is where the Bharat Ratna is made
The Bharat Ratna is made at only one place in the country. The Government of India assigns the responsibility of making it to the Kolkata Mint. Here, this medal is prepared through hard work by experienced artisans. Established in 1757, the Kolkata Mint has been manufacturing the Bharat Ratna since its inception. Other awards such as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and Param Vir Chakra are also prepared at this mint.
