The thought of Earth’s destruction has always been a cause of fear and concern for humanity. Throughout history, we have heard countless predictions about catastrophic events that could wipe out entire mankind as well as our planet Earth. Now, Scientists have warned that an asteroid named Asteroid 2024 YR4, measuring up to 100 meters in width, is approaching our planet Earth. It is expected to pass extremely close in December 2032, with a chance of collision. Traveling at a staggering speed of 38,000 km per hour, its impact could wipe out multiple cities.
Danger approaching at 38,000 Km/hour! Several cities to be wiped out, China is deploying ‘army’, the asteroid to hit Earth in…
In order to counter this threat, China has commenced mobilizing a team of space engineers, aiming to divert the asteroid and prevent a catastrophic impact. As per a report in News18Hindi, scientists initially estimated the chances of this asteroid colliding with Earth at 1.3%, but recent calculations have increased the probability to 2.3%. As of now, it remains thousands of kilometers away, but the risk is expected to rise as it moves closer.
According to a research by the Abu Dhabi-based International Astronomy Center (IAC), the asteroid, codenamed ‘2024 YR4’ will pass very close to the Earth in 2032, and carries a high chance of collision
The report further mentioned that the experts warn that if the asteroid strikes, it could trigger a massive mid-air explosion, unleashing around 8 million tons of TNT energy—500 times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The impact could reduce everything within a 50-kilometer radius to ashes, causing widespread devastation.
As per the official website of NASA, Asteroid 2024 YR4 is a near-Earth asteroid, meaning it is an asteroid in an orbit that brings it into Earth’s region of the Solar System. 2024 YR4 is estimated to be about 130 to 300 feet (40 – 90 meters) wide and has a very small chance of Earth impact on December 22, 2032.
This object is of particular interest for planetary defense for two reasons: 1) it is large enough to cause localized damage in the unlikely event that it should impact Earth, and 2) while 2024 YR4 has a very small chance of Earth impact in 2032, it has surpassed the 1% impact probability threshold to warrant formal notification of the object to other U.S. government agencies involved in planetary defense as well as to the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group and to the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs per the International Asteroid Warning Network’s notification charter.
2024 YR4 was first reported to the Minor Planet Center – the international clearing house for small body positional measurements – by the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile on January 27, 2025. ATLAS comprises several telescopes around the world and is managed by the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy.
