Prakriti Lamsal’s death: Odisha’s KIIT University witnesses massive protests after death of Nepali student, Kathmandu sends…

KIIT Suicide Case: Massive protests were held at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar on Monday, 17 February 2025 after the tragic death of a student from Nepal inside the university hostel.

The deceased student, Prakriti Lamsal, was a third-year B. Tech computer science student. She was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday, February 15 evening, allegedly by suicide.

A massive outrage erupted as soon as the news of Prakriti Lamsal’s demise went viral and many students, including many Nepali nationals, launched a big protest.

The Nepalese students have accused the university of trying to cover up the case as they claimed that the administration had unfairly asked Nepali students to vacate the campus.

The students are demanding a transparent investigation into Prakriti’s death.

Prakriti’s friends have come forward with claims that she had been facing harassment from her ex-boyfriend, Advik Srivastava. They claimed that the accused used to inflict physical and mental pressure on her during their three-year relationship. They also stated that Srivastava maintained an abusive personality, which took an extreme call on Lamsal.

Prakriti’s brother filed a police complaint, accusing Advik of harassment. The police have taken him into custody and charged him under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for abetment of suicide.

A police team visited the hostel and sent the body for a post-mortem following which it will be handed over to the family. Furious students from Nepal blocked the road near the KIIT campus, alleging that the university authorities took no action when the student reached out to the International Relations Office at the university, warning them of harassment by her batchmate.

Hundreds of students gathered on the campus and chanted slogans demanding justice.

Meanwhile, the university administration issued a statement confirming Prakriti’s death, stating that she was in a relationship with another student, and her suicide may have been linked to personal reasons.

The authorities also announced that all international students from Nepal must leave the campus immediately.

This decision left many Nepali students angry, as they were given very little time to make travel arrangements.

The issue has now attracted the attention of Nepali PM KP Sharma Oli and the Indian Embassy in Nepal. Embassy of India, Kathmandu, said in a statement that it is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a Nepali student.

The Nepalese Embassy in Delhi said the KIIT assured it would arrange for the accommodation of the Nepalese students in the university hostel and cover their academic losses.

Nepalese PM, Opposition Raise Issue

Nepalese PM KP Sharma Oli reacted to the incident and sent two officials to the university. “Our Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers to counsel Nepali students affected in Odisha. Additionally, arrangements have been made to ensure they have the option to either remain in their hostel or return home, based on their preference.”

Nepali opposition parties confronted the Oli government accusing it of inefficiency. The All Nepal National Independent Student Unions’ (Revolutionary), the student wing of opposition Maoist Center has called for heightened diplomatic efforts into the matter.
