Bangladesh Army Chief: General Waker-uz-Zaman, the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, emphasized the need for peace and stability in the country during his speech at the Dhaka International Marathon 2025. According to the Dhaka Tribune, General Waker highlighted the importance of health, sports, and youth after participating in the Dhaka International Marathon. This marathon saw the participation of 10,000 runners from 10 countries, making it the largest marathon in Bangladesh. He mentioned that promoting activities like marathons will make society healthier and more empowered.
In his statement, General Waker-uz-Zaman appealed for peace and stability in the country. He stated that peace is crucial for the economy and social development of Bangladesh. Continuous turmoil could have a negative impact on the youth of the country, hence it is essential to create an atmosphere of national consensus and reconciliation.
Discussing international relations between India and Bangladesh, General Waker mentioned that India is an important neighbour for Bangladesh. He said, “We depend on India in many matters, and India also avails facilities from us. Therefore, both countries should maintain good relations and consider their security interests.”
General Waker also stated that Bangladesh will not take any steps against any neighbouring country that would go against their strategic interests. He mentioned that we are in favour of maintaining harmony with India and hope that India will also consider the interests of Bangladesh. Both countries should move forward while respecting each other’s economic, security, and strategic interests.
In recent months, political tension has risen in Bangladesh. The statement by the army chief can be seen as an attempt to maintain stability in Bangladesh and move the economy in the right direction.
