IIT Success stories: We have often heard that IITs have changed the way the many sections of the Indian society lives in. Investor Aviral Bhatnagar has recently shared an inspiring story about his IIT-Bombay hostel mate, Ashok Talpatra, showcasing the impact of IITs on social mobility in India. Here is the information you need to know about the success stories of IIT.
In his story, Bhatnagar has shared that Talpatra, his roommate, who came from a financially disadvantaged background, achieved an outstanding All India Rank (AIR) of 63 out of 4.7 lakh candidates in the IIT entrance exam. As of today, Talpatra serves as a Staff Software Engineer at Google in Zurich, Switzerland.
“Ashok Talpatra was my hostel mate at IITB. His parents earned less than 10K/month, and they lived in a slum for 500 INR/month. He cracked AIR 63 out of 4.7L students and is now a Staff Software Engineer at Google in Zurich. IITs are India’s biggest social mobility enablers,” Bhatnagar posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Success story of Ashok Talpatra
Talpatra started his career with internships at Microsoft, NeuralTechSoft, and Novanet. During his time at IIT Bombay, he also worked as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for essential courses such as Data Structures & Algorithms, Operating Systems, and Computer Networks. It should also be mentioned that since August 2022, Talpatra has been reportedly serving as a Staff Software Engineer at Google in Zurich, Switzerland.
Are IIT really successful?
“True. State univ are equally good too. My dad earned 6-8k + perks. My friend’s dad earned 2k-5k. We lived in shared joint family. Today my friends make top 2-5% of US in Silicon Valley. We all went to state universities. We had no guidance to crack IITs. IT is gr8 leveler”, a Startup founder Atul Mehra was quoted saying in a report by the Economic Times.
Readers must note that while IITs undeniably offer a pathway to life-changing success for many students, opinions do vary on whether they offer themselves as the ultimate driver of social mobility in India and help in the upliftment of weaker section of society in India. Many argue that other educational institutions, skill-based programs, and government initiatives also play a vital role in empowering individuals and transforming lives.
