BSNL 5G: In a major challenge for Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio, and Sunil Mittal-led Airtel, state-owned telecom provider BSNL has the launched the facility to book SIM cards online and get them delivered at your doorstep within 90 minutes. Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom provider after market leader Jio, had already launched this facility for subscribers, and now BSNL is following suit as the state-run provider pushes to snatch market share from private telcos.

Earlier, Airtel had launched a similar service, by partnering with quick-commerce giant Blinkit to delivery SIM cards to customers within 10 minutes. The service is currently available in 16 major cities across the country.
Notably, BSNL, which has strengthened its 4G network across the country, and its eyeing to roll out its 5G services by next year, has significantly expanded its user base since July last year when all private players, including Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio and Sunil Mittal-led Airtel, had hiked their mobile tariffs, which caused a large chunk of their users to flock to state-owned provider.
In a statement late last year, BSNL said the work on its 5G network is advancing at a rapid pace and trial phases are nearly complete, adding that its 5G rollout is focused on self-reliance, embodying the spirit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
