Russia-Ukraine war: In a significant move that could have a major impact on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the tensions between Israel and Iran, Britain has approved the purchase of at least 12 F-35 fifth-generation fighter stealth fighter jets from the US, capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The move is aimed to at enhance Britain’s nuclear deterrence against nuclear threat posed by China, and particularly Russia, in wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, according to officials.
As per a Sky News report, UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer will inform his NATO allies at the ongoing NATO summit at The Hague that its new F-35 squadron is ready to join alliance missions.
‘New era’ for Royal Air Force
Starmer has described the decision as a “new era” in the history of the British Royal Air Force, which will, for the first time since the 1990s, have the ability to carry airborne nuclear weapons. “In an era of radical uncertainty, we can no longer take peace for granted.F-35 dual-capable aircraft will usher in a new era for our world-leading Royal Air Force and will deter enemy threats that threaten Britain and our allies,” the British PM was quoted as saying.
Starmer also reiterated Britain’s “unquestionable” commitment to NATO, but stated that steps must be taken to “protect the Euro-Atlantic region for generations to come.” NATO chief Mark Rutte welcomed London’s move, saying, Britain has declared its nuclear deterrence to NATO for decades and he was elated that the Royal Air Force is enhancing its nuclear umbrella by acquiring nuclear-capable F-35A fighter jets.
Britain’s announcement comes at a time when US President Donald Trump, as part of his ‘America First’ policy, in putting pressure on Washington’s European allies in the NATO to contribute more towards their own security, especially in terms of finances. Trump has on multiple occasions said that Europe must take its defense “more seriously”, and insisted that US’ NATO allies must take their defense spending to 5 percent of GDP.
UK nuclear capability
Unlike the US, Britain does not a have nuclear triad, and lack the capability to launch nuclear weapons from the air. Only five nations– the US, China, Russia, India and France possess the nuclear triad capability, which means they can launch nuclear strikes from land, air and sea.
The UK’s nuclear deterrence is limited to its Trident-equipped submarines, which is why it is now considering to purchase the US-made F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter jets, that are capable of carrying low-power B61 gravity nuclear bombs. If the F-35 deal goes through, Britain would acquire the capability to launch nuclear strikes from air, vastly enhancing its deterrence capabilities.
