Pakistan economy: India and China are two predominant economic superpowers in South Asia, but interestingly there is a vital metric on which Pakistan and Bangladesh have raced ahead of not just regional heavyweights, but global economic giants like the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom.

Why Pakistan, Bangladesh are ahead of India and China on THIS list?

According to latest World Bank report on list of countries where people can’t afford a calorie-sufficient diet, Pakistan and Bangladesh are ranked ahead of India and China, and even developed nations like the US, UK and Japan. As per the report, over 99 percent of Pakistan’s population can afford a calorie-sufficient diet, while only a minute fraction (0.3%) lack this vital requirement.

The numbers are similar in Bangladesh, where a miniscule 0.6% of population are unable to afford the recommend calories needed for proper functioning.

In contrast, about 3.2% of India’s 1.4 billion population cannot afford a calorie-sufficient diet, while the figure is 1.2% for United States and Japan, as per the report.

What is a ‘calorie-sufficient diet’?

A calorie-sufficient diet signifies a diet that successfully meets the body’s daily energy needs, and helps an individual to remain energetic, while maintaining a healthy body-weight ratio. A healthy, calorie-sufficient diet provides the calories to function properly and carry out daily tasks.

As per the World Bank report, adult human male requires about 2000-3000 daily calories to function optimally, while an adult woman needs 1,600-2,400 calories on a daily basis. The calorie requirements vary depending upon factors like age, gender, activity level and overall health of the individual.

Which countries have the worst record?

As per the list, Madagascar has the worst record in this vital metric, with 78.3% of its population not being able to fford a calorie-sufficient diet. Notably, the top 22 countries on the list are located in Africa, including Central African Republic (67%), Zambia (65.1%), Nigeria (44.4%), Burundi (41.5%), Tanzania (36.8%), Angola (36%), Sierra Leone (34.9%), Rwanda (28.1%), DRC (27.9%), Eswatini (26.6%) and South Africa (24.2%) .

According to World Bank, just 12 countries– Canada, France, Iceland, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and UAE– have a cent-percent record as every individual in these nations is able to afford a calorie-sufficient diet.
