New Delhi: US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in an interview on Sunday, 28 September 2025, that he needs to fix several countries, including India, Switzerland and Brazil.
Lutnick warned that these countries should open their markets and not take steps that would harm the USA, which is why our relations are facing problems.
‘India will have to accept US’s conditions’
In a conversation with News Nation, he said that if India wants to sell its goods in the US, it will have to accept the Trump administration’s conditions. The US minister advised India to react appropriately.
He said that these issues will be resolved with time, but if you want to sell your goods to American consumers, you will have to coordinate with the US President.
Negotiations underway on India-US trade deal
It is noteworthy that a high-level Indian delegation led by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited the US between September 22 and 24. During this period, important discussions were held between the two countries regarding the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and investment.
According to the Commerce Ministry, Piyush Goyal met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor. Both countries agreed that negotiations would continue to conclude a trade agreement expeditiously, ensuring it is beneficial for both countries.
Lutnick sets three conditions for removal of tariffs
On September 5, Lutnick had set three conditions for the removal of the 25% extra tariff on India. He stated that India would have to stop buying oil from Russia, withdraw from BRICS, and support the United States.
He also stated that India would come to the negotiating table with Trump within a month or two and apologise. According to Lutnick, India will try to negotiate a new deal with Trump. This deal will be on Trump’s terms, and he will finalise it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
