New Delhi: China has equipped its light combat tank ‘Type 99B’, capable of fighting in high-altitude areas, with advanced information-based command, communication capabilities, and integrated firepower. The Type 99 or ZTZ-99 is China’s third-generation main battle tank. It was designed to replace the older Type 88 tank. The Type 99 MBT is China’s first mass-produced third-generation main battle tank. The Type 99 is based on the Soviet T-72 chassis. Several variants of it are currently in service with the Chinese army.
Why Is It A Matter Of Concern For India?
The South China Morning Post, citing official media reports, stated that the news of the combat tank being equipped with advanced capabilities comes against the backdrop of India unveiling its indigenously developed light tank, Zorawar, for warfare in high-altitude areas, especially on the border with China.
What Upgrades Have Been Made To The Type 99 Tank?
The Type 99B tank was officially unveiled to the world for the first time at the Chinese Victory Day parade. However, a Type 99B prototype equipped with two GL-6 APS launchers and four radars was seen in China earlier in 2024. The new upgrades include an upgraded blast-reactive armour module, advanced information technology, and a system for sharing information with other fighting vehicles. Additionally, there is a 360-degree vision system for the crew, a new fire control system with next-generation thermal optics, and new photoelectric and sensor systems for enhanced battlefield situational awareness.
Type 99 Is Heavier Than Zorawar
The report states that the Chinese tank weighs approximately 55 tons, which is heavier than India’s Zorawar tank. According to the South China Morning Post, China’s Type 99 is a third-generation main battle tank designed to compete with state-of-the-art Western tanks.
The Zorawar tank is named after the Dogra warrior General Zorawar Singh. It weighs approximately 25 tons. China announced the development of its light tank in 2017 and showcased it at a military parade held in Beijing this September. According to state media reports, the advanced version is designed to perform better in high-altitude areas and cold weather conditions.
