In an extremely rare case of same-sex marriage in India, especially between women, a woman in Gopalganj district of Bihar married her own niece with whom she was having an affair for the past three years.
Suman, a middle-aged woman, left her husband, eloped with her niece, Shobha, and married her according to Hindu rituals, after the couple were involved in a same-sex relationship for the last three years.
Videos of the ‘unique’ wedding have gone viral on social media showing the aunt-niece couple exchanging garlands and vows at a local temple in Belwa village in Gopalganj district.

The video shows the aunt, tying a mangalsutra around her niece’s neck, and couple then proceed to take the ‘saat phere‘ (circumambulating the sacred fire to seven times) to signify their commitment to each other for seven lifetimes.
Asked about her decision to marry a woman, especially her own niece, Suman said she is madly in love with Shobha and couldn’t bear the thought of her being married to someone else.
“Shobha is the love of my life. I could not even imagine her losing her if she got married to another person. This fear of losing each other motivated us to leave everything behind and get married, without caring about what the world may think,” said Suman.
Shobha also spoke along similar lines, saying that they do not care what the world has to say as long as they are together.
The couple later announced their marriage on social by sharing videos of the ceremony to inform their families about their mutual decision.
However, couple’s wedding triggered a heated debate on social media platforms with some supporting their decision while others dubbed it “unnatural”, a “violation of natural laws” and even called it “signs of Kalyug (dark ages)”.
