Dhaka: Amid the violence and chaos that ensued in Bangladesh following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country on Monday, protesters reportedly set ablaze the house of former Bangladesh cricket captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who is a Member of Parliament for the Narail-2 constituency in the Khulna division, secured the seat for the second consecutive term as a candidate of the Awami League in the general elections held in Bangladesh earlier this year.
Local media reported that vandals set fire to Mortaza’s house after Sheikh Hasina departed the country amidst significant student protests.
Mortaza, who captained Bangladesh in 117 matches across all formats—the highest for his nation—claimed 390 international wickets and amassed 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs, and 54 T20Is over his extensive cricket career. Upon retiring, he joined the Awami League led by Hasina in 2018 and was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Narail-2 constituency.
Bangladesh’s leading daily “Dhaka Tribune” reported that the protesters also set fire to the District Awami League office and vandalised its President Subash Chandra Bose’s house.
Meanwhile, Hasina arrived at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad, near Delhi, on Monday evening aboard a Bangladesh Air Force military transport plane, while thousands of protesters stormed and vandalized Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister in Dhaka.
Several reports cited that she will be leaving for London soon.
