Appear by Feb 12…Bangladesh creates more trouble for Sheikh Hasina, Yunus govt decides to…

Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s troubles do not seem to be ending. The country’s International Criminal Tribunal issued arrest warrants against Hasina and 10 others, including her former defence adviser Tariq Ahmed Siddiq and former IGP Benazir Ahmed, for alleged disappearances and killings.

The order was issued by the tribunal headed by Justice Md Golam Martuza Majumdar after the prosecution filed two petitions for the arrest of the 11 persons. The tribunal has ordered the Bangladesh authorities to arrest and present Sheikh Hasina and others by February 12. This information was given in ‘The Daily Star’.

The development marks a new turn in the political situation in Bangladesh, where former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her aides are facing allegations of human rights violations and illegal killings.

Last year, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina and 45 others. The warrants were issued against them in connection with alleged crimes against humanity that took place during the student-led agitation. The movement resulted in Hasina being removed from power and more than 500 people were killed. Hasina fled Dhaka to India and has been living there ever since.

Relations between India and Bangladesh nosedived following Hasina’s ouster and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus becoming the country’s chief adviser, particularly over the issue of the Hindu minority.

Bangladesh’s interim government has promised to extradite Hasina and has also sent a diplomatic note to India on the matter. Hasina has been living in safe houses in India since August and has been changing locations periodically due to security concerns.

The political leader, who is living in political exile, has, however, issued periodic statements on the political situation in Bangladesh either through the social media platforms of her party, the Awami League, or through her son Sajeeb Wazed.

The Ministry of External Affairs, while confirming receipt of an extradition request from Bangladesh, said there would be “no comment” from the government. A senior source in the ministry had earlier told News18 that the government is likely to formally respond to the note as per diplomatic protocol.
