The longtime leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was neutralized in a major airstrike by Israel last year, according to senior Hezbollah official Wafiq Safa. While addressing mediapersons on Sunday, Safa stated that Nasrallah died on September 27 while overseeing operations from a war room in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The war room was located in an underground bunker. The devastating attack also killed five Hezbollah members and was so intense that it demolished several buildings, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Israel’s military wasted no time and announced the Hezbollah leader’s killing, terming it a major victory against terrorism. Nasrallah was the leader of the group for 32 years. He transformed and modernised into a powerful political and militant army in Lebanon. “He led the battle and the war from this very location,” Safa told reporters during a press briefing near the attack site.
The airstrike escalated minor conflicts into a full-scale war, ravaging parts of Lebanon. On November 27 last year, with US intervention, a ceasefire put a halt to the violence, demanding that Hezbollah pull back to north of the Litani River and take down its military facilities in southern Lebanon.
Despite this truce, tensions remain high. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has accused Hezbollah of breaking the pact and cautioned that military action could follow if Hezbollah does not comply. Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, has warned that they might resume attacks if Israeli forces don’t withdraw from southern Lebanon by the end of January.
It is to be noted that the United Nations is keeping an eye on the fragile ceasefire, but recent clashes indicate that the conflict is not yet over as both sides continue to exchange accusations of violations.
