Worlds safest countries: Amidst all the wars raging in almost every part of the globe, it is hard to believe that there exist nations that are still somehow far away from all the death and conflict, and boast negligible crime rates, providing a peaceful and nurturing environment for their citizens.
The Global Peace Index (GPI), a report produced the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), an Australian-based think tank, ranks 163 countries based on how peaceful they are.
World’s safest countries
- Iceland: According to the Global Peace Index (GPI), Iceland holds the distinction of being the world’s safest country for the 15th consecutive year. The Nordic country, which has a small population of 3,82,000, boasts an almost negligible crime rate, which is attributed to its high-quality living, good education, and low population. Notably, this peaceful nation does not even have its own army.
- Denmark: One of the happiest nations on the planet, this Scandinavian country values equality for its citizens, making behaviors like social hatred almost non-existent. Danish politics is based on trust and honesty, reflecting the values upon which this country is based.
- Ireland: Though born out of a long, blood revolution, Ireland today is one of the safest countries on the planet, with a crime rate that is almost negligible. The country is regarded as a haven for its citizens, and for visitors as well, making it one of the most tourist-friendly nations on Earth.
- New Zealand: The fourth safest country in the world, according to the GPI list, New Zealand has a very low crime rate, with violent crimes being almost non-existent. New Zealanders are considered open-minded people and the country promotes freedom of expression, equality, speech, and other human values at the highest level.
- Austria: Once a part of Hitler’s Nazi Germany, Austria is one of the safest places in the world today, both for its citizens as well as for tourists. Boasting a low crime rate, violent crimes are a rarity in Austria.
- Singapore: A bustling city state, Singapore has one of the lowest crime rates in the world and is one of the safest places in the world. Notably, Singapore dishes out harsh punishment to offenders even for petty crimes, which acts as a deterrent for potential crime.
Where does India rank?
According to the GPI report, India ranks a dismal 116th out of 163 countries, and while there has been some improvement in recent years, the country is still plagued by an alarming crime rate, that is way higher than developed nations.
Pakistan ranks 140th
While India’s spot on the list is nothing to write home about, Pakistan, our neighbouring country and arch nemesis, is even worse, ranking 14oth, making it one of the most dangerous places in the world for citizens and tourists.
